Great success of anniversary competition at leading trade fair Light+Building

There were some happy faces for Martin Conrad from Switzerland, Benjamin Dunst from Austria and Dominik Göb from Germany. They are the winners of the 10th European Competition of Young Electricians (CYE), which took place from 7 to 9 April 2008 as part of the world’s key trade fair Light+Building in Frankfurt/Main. After competing for 20 hours it was clear who had best managed the building system installation task based on the KNX standard. The maximum number of points was 280, and the difference between the first three places was not more than 16 points – so the race was neck-and-neck. "It was a unique experience to have been there, with the chance to get to know so many new things" commented European champion Martin Conrad during the award ceremony in the historic Kaisersaal of the Frankfurt Römer.

In total there were twelve nations competing in the 10th CYE. The other participants were Daniel Skov Pedersen (Denmark), Armin Bürgstaller (Italy), Graham Rooney (Ireland), Koen Weyne (Belgium), Jorge Ignacio Coín (Spain), Peter Vass (Hungary), Tommy Viktil (Norway), Charly Pons (France) and Pedro Miguel Fernandes (Portugal) who all received a certificate of 4th place. (The above sequence of participants follows the numbers of the competition boxes and is not indicative of any ranking in the competition.)

The CYE arena attracted a lot of attention from the public. The international youth competition was held in the centre of the trade fair, in the entrance area of Galleria Nord.

This meant that many visitors paid close attention to the action taking place in the various competition boxes.

During the award ceremony on the evening of 9 April 2008 in the historic Kaisersaal at the Frankfurt Römer, which was as festive as it was entertaining, the guest of honour, Parliamentary Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology Hartmut Schauerte, together with the chairman of the CYE, Klaus Träger, handed over the medals and certificates. The evening was concluded in the historic Römerhallen which are situated underneath the Kaisersaal.

The Light+Building trade fair attracted a total of 165,000 visitors – 22 percent more than the previous exhibition. About 40,000 of them – or every fourth visitor – was somebody working in the trade, which means that this group represented the largest proportion of visitors.

The 10th CYE is run by the European umbrella organisation for the electrical engineering trades, the Association européenne des entreprises de l’installation électrique (AIE), in Brussels/Belgium. The event has been organised by the Zentralverband der Deutschen Elektro- und Informationstechnischen Handwerke (ZVEH), Frankfurt/Main (German Association of Electrical and IT installation enterprises). Apart from the KNX Association, Brussels, there are 28 well-known companies that give support to the competition.

The German Association of Electrical and IT installation enterprises (Zentralverband der Deutschen Elektro- und Informationstechnischen Handwerke - ZVEH): the electrical and IT professions in Germany, with their three professional categories – electricians, IT specialists and electrical engineers – include some 78,000 businesses with around 317,000 employees. The annual turnover of the industry in 2006 was approximately € 31 bn. The ZVEH represents the interests of 15 state associations with approx. 400 guilds.

Let me introduce myself:
I'm Konny from the CYE

The key visual for the CYE is here at last: "Konny" is a friendly young chap, pictured here doing some KNX programming, who has been created to advertise the European Competition of Young Electricians - CYE - among his peers. The CYE 2008 will run from 7 to 9 April in parallel with the Light+Building (6-11.04.2008) trade fair, in Galleria 1 (North) at the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre.

The key visual will be used online and will adorn PR reports relating to the CYE. Konny will additionally be hitting the big time by appearing on a poster at the exhibition centre, showing the way to the CYE. Konny represents the KNX generation - up-and-coming electrical engineers who have grown up with building system technology and for whom the networking and automation of buildings is an everyday matter. For the first time, the practical part of the CYE will focus on building system technology, based on the bus technology standard KNX. So far, teams from twelf different countries have registered for the 10th CYE: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France (FFIE), Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Hungary.

In 2008, Germany will host the 10th AIE Competition of Young Electricians - the CYE. At this European professional competition, young electricians from 15 nations will put their knowledge to the test from 7 to 9 April 2008, during the top international trade fair light+building, which will be held in Frankfurt am Main between 06.04 and 11.04.2008. Currently, teams from the following nine countries have confirmed their participation: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France (FFIE), Germany, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. The event?s patron is Günther Verheugen, Vice President of the European Commission and EU Commissioner in charge of Enterprise and Industry. The grand award ceremony will be held on 9 April 2008 in the Emperor's Hall in Frankfurt´s Römer (city hall), on the invitation of the City of Frankfurt.

Winners of national professional competitions who will not have reached the age of 25 by 2008 are called upon to take part. For the first time the practical exercises in the field of technical building services will be based on KNX, the European bus system. However, it must be no more than two years since participants completed their training. The practical part of the competition will involve tasks related to the field of building systems and services. The aim of the CYE is to demonstrate the advantages of high-quality professional training, and to boost public recognition for the professional work of electricians. At the same time, it reveals to the public the exceptional quality of training in the member countries of the European Association of Electrical Contractors (AIE).

Since 1992 the CYE has been held every two years by the AIE. In 2008, the competition will be hosted for the second time in Germany by the German Association of Electrical and IT installation enterprises (ZVEH), Germany´s national professional organisation (the first time was in 1995).

Everyone involved will also have the chance to expand their professional horizons, because the competition is committed to support talented young electricians in their professional development. Candidates and their accompanying experts will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the often wide variety of work and training methods used in the other participating countries, as well as their various working materials and tools, and the applicable technical standards. In this way, the exchange of experience also helps to bring the already high levels of performance and examinations of the AIE member organisations further into line with each other.

Detailed information will shortly be available at www.cye2008.com.
